After the French Revolution, the new government converted this church into a mausoleum for great Frenchmen. (Women weren't admitted until 1995.) Voltaire, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Emile Zola, Alexandre Dumas, and Marie Curie are among those interred here. Rumors that Voltaire's body had been disinterred and thrown into a garbage heap by religious fanatics were disproved when his coffin was opened in 1897.
